Chapter 1: Cerulean Gym

Ash finished changing into his pajamas. He felt like something was wrong- and seemed to know what was going on. He had seen the calendar in Misty's bedroom. It was July- 1/2 a year until Misty's birthday. But that didn't matter to Ash. All he was caring about was that he had 3 months to get 8 badges to re-enter the Pokémon League. He remembered when he called for Charizard in that battle with Richie. He also remembered when he bought that weird spray that made Charizard devolve all the way back to Charmander. He liked that, and so did Misty & Brock. No more having to see Ash get roasted, or for those 2. "Ce la vie," Ash thought, "Brock's gone now. And he's toast when I challenge him back at Pewter City." Now, enter Ash's point of view:

But how was I to convince Misty? She'd either become a Golem, or be as easy to persuade as a Ditto. Now, enter a narrative perspective:

Ash was thinking about how he'd convince Misty to come with him to Pewter City. Her bike had been paid for, and Ash sometimes regretted paying her back. He knew that she'd get off his back about it, and that 1 plus always seemed to outweigh any regrets. He heard the door open. He was in Misty's room, and Misty was coming, with a flat face on. "Ash," she whispered, "something wrong?", barely audible.

"Yeah. I guess now's as good a time to ask you this as ever,... so, here goes. Can we go the Pewter City? I wanna get badges for the Pokémon League."

She smiled, and put her arms over his shoulders. "Ash, do you ever learn?", she chuckled, "I love you- and will follow you anywhere you go. You just don't know how safe I feel traveling around with you." she comforted. "Now come on. It's getting late.". Misty climbed into her bed, and Ash followed her. Misty slept quickly, but Ash had something on his mind. "How can I pull myself to beat her?" he thought frantically, "Maybe I don't- isn't Misty off duty as Cerulean Gym Leader? Then I'll have to beat Daisy, Lilly, or Violet. Man, that'd be easy...", and with that, he fell asleep.

Chapter 2: A Letter from Oak

The night passes. Ash wakes up before Misty does, and hates it. He really wished Misty woke up before him. He stayed put, but his stomach was growling at him. He knew it was a matter of minutes before Misty woke up from that. He saw out of the corner of his eye Misty's eyes open. "Hey Ash," Misty teased, your stomach's growling at you."

He couldn't help but blush at that. "Yeah.". Someone knocked on the door, and walked in. "Misty, you have mail." Daisy chimed. She threw it with a flick of her wrist so Misty could catch it. She opened it, and saw a hologram. (Author's note: Think of the hologram from the beginning of Pokémon: The First Movie- Mewtwo Strikes Back) It started playing by itself, and had a small yellow button on a side. An image of Professor Oak was standing before them. It spoke:

This message will concern Misty more than it will you, Ash, but, pay attention to this. Ash, your mother informed me that you two are in love. Now, Misty, did you ever consider becoming a Pokémon Master, and I say with accent, along with Ash? If the answer is a yes, push the yellow button within the next 10 seconds. Your time starts now.

Misty quickly pushed the button. She'd love to be a Pokémon Master, especially if Ash was by her side. The voice continued:

Well, I see that you would. Then take that other envelope that's inside the original, and read the letter. In addition, Ash, how did you get so lucky to run into Misty? But I digress... read the letter.

Misty took the envelope from Ash's hands, and opened it. It read:

Dear Misty Waterflower and Ash Ketchum,

Please accept the new available program for the Pokémon League that lets 2 people share the glory of becoming a champion of the Pokémon League!

This new 'partners program' lets 2 people collect 8 badges, just like the regular part. But, each person must collect 4 badges, and when combined, makes 8- making them eligible. The same Pokémon Gyms, just made friendlier.

Here's how it works: Once a partnership is considered a League Champ, the 2 people in the partnership battle each other.

Misty collapsed anime style when she read that last sentence. She knew Ash could cream her in a Pokémon battle. It continued (this was supposed to include last line of the above border):

the 2 people in the partnership battle each other. After that, the winner of regular league will battle the victor. If the partner wins, he/she wins a trip to the Pokémon League of the U.S.A. If the individual wins, he/she gets the trip alone. No matter what the outcome of all this, all 3 people are considered Pokémon Masters.

If you 2 want to join the partnership division of the Pokémon League, fill out the forms that came with this.

That was the end of the letter, not counting the signature.

Chapter 4: Strategies

Ash & Misty immediately started filling out the forms. It didn't take very long- Misty was finished in about 3 1/2 minutes. Ash was about 1 letter behind her. Once they had sent it back to the Indigo Plateau for processing, they didn't know what to do besides eat breakfast. Misty cooked all of them some pancakes, and that was enough for Ash. While they were eating, Ash & Misty took their plates back to Misty's room. They needed to talk. Ash started: "Misty, do you realize that you need to start collecting badges?"

Misty: "Yeah. No more watching you on the sidelines, now I have to do something."

Ash: "It's okay. The letter gave us a chart of which gyms we need to go to. I have it."

He reached into his pack & got it out while Misty watched, and chomped on her pancake. He also got a different thing out- a small tube that was flexible, that you used to link 2 Pokédexes together to trade Pokémon.

Ash: We can figure out which Gyms you'd be good at, and which ones you're not. This tube thingy lets us trade Pokémon.

Misty: Trade Pokémon!??!?! Why???
Ash: Sometimes both of us have 1 or 2 Pokémon that are good against a Gym, but don't have 3 with 1 of us. Do you understand that?

Ash wasn't sure whether Misty was getting it. It wasn't the critical 'Do you understand?', but the one that said, 'Do you get what I'm saying?'

Misty: I do.
Ash: Then that's it. We'll leave tomorrow for Pewter City. I think you have something to do- train your Pokémon. So will I, and I'll be on top of Pokédex all day. <Misty giggled> You're lucky. All of yours are right here in the Gym, and you can train just about all of them at once, besides Vulpix.

After that, she just walked out, too embarrassed to stay in the room. Her face was a bright red. After a day of doing nothing but training every single Pokémon they had, they left- bound for Pewter City, and a battle with Brock.
